Churchyards

This churchyard is the place where for centuries the people of the village have been laid to rest, and their families come to remember them.

The Parochial Church Council, which is responsible for the upkeep of the graveyard, wants you to enjoy this space, and for it to be a place of peace for all who visit. At the same time the PCC needs to help everyone appreciate its obligations and show how we can all be at ease in the use of this churchyard. Contrary to common perception, agreeing for someone to be buried here, or for remains to be laid to rest following cremation, does not 'give ownership' or rights free of other responsibilities over the plot or space to the family of those who have died.

In general we know people’s needs vary, and so do the ways in which they wish to remember their loved ones, so we ask you to be respectful of those differences in the way you behave in the churchyard. Please leave the churchyard clean and tidy as you would wish to find it and place only natural flowers, wreaths or plants on the grave, in consideration of the environment.

The Parochial Church Council is required to make sure the Churchyard Regulations, as set down by Chelmsford Diocese, are followed. These Regulations include guidance on what is allowed to be placed in the churchyard, including monuments, and can be downloaded here.

Thank you for your help and cooperation with us in an important aspect of our pastoral and legal responsibilities, as well as our keen desire to serve the people of this community. You can help us to keep this churchyard a welcoming place for everyone; if in doubt please feel free to contact the Team Vicar or churchwardens for advice before making any changes or additions to graves.

The churchyards are maintained by a group of volunteers with the aid of the Parish Council, and they do their best to keep on top of things especially in the growing season. We are trying to make them as environmentally friendly as possible so please consider what is placed on the graves and where it will be in a few years time. If you would like to join this wonderful crew or adopt an area that you care for please email: ecchurchwardens@gmail.com
